MAHASHIVRATREE GROUP TOUR

KATHMANDU

Kathmandu is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Nepal.  The city is the urban core of the Kathmandu Valley in the Himalayas, which also contains two sister cities namely Patan or Lalitpur, 5 kilometres (3,1 m) to its southeast and Bhaktapur, 14 kilometres (8,7 m) to its east.  Kathmandu is not only the capital of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal but also the headquarters of the Central Region (Madhyamanchal) among the five development regions constituted by the 14 administrative zones of Nepal located at the central part of the country.

IN KATHMANDU

Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swyambhunath Stupa & Patan visit Kathmandu Square, with its old temples and palaces, epitomizes the religious and cultural life of the people.  Here, the kings of Nepal are crowned and solemnized.  Interesting things for visitors to see are Taleju temple, gigantic figure of Kalbhairav (the god of destruction), Basantapur Durbar and Temple of Kumari (living goddess).

After Durbar Square visit Swaya-mbhunath or also known as the 'Monkey Temple', the world's most glorious Buddhist Stupa of over 2000 years standing on a hillock at a majestic height of 77m.  This site also commands an excellent view of the Kathmandu Valley.  Later visit the Patan Durbar Square, a World Heritage Site.  Marvel at the ancient palaces, temples and shrines with their splendid courtyards.  Visit Pashupatinath, Bhadgaon and Bodhnath.

BHAIRWA

Bhairwa is a municipality near the Indian border on the Outer Terai plains of Nepal, 265km (165m) west of Kathmandu Nepal's capital.  Siddharthanger is the administrative seat of Rupandehi District.  It is also known as ''Gateway of Lumbini'', Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha is 25km away to the west of Siddharthanager, Bhairahawa was derived from the deity Bhairava a manifestation of Shiva. Siddharthanager comes from The Buddha's given name Siddhartha.  The name Siddhartanager was given by Komal Dutta Tiwari.

AYODHYA and SARNATH

Visit Ayodhya.  With little over 10 sq Km in area, lying on the banks of the river
Ghagra or Saryu, this ancient city is believed to be the birth place of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  The holy book of Hindus - the Ramayana - says, the city was founded by Manu.  Later, it became the capital of the descendants of the Surya dynasty.  Lord Rama was the most celebrated King of the dynasty.  Known as 'Kosaldesa' in ancient times, the place has been described as a ''city built by gods and being as prosperous as paradise itself'', in the Ahtarvaveda.  From the time immemorial, this place has been noted for the performance of various rituals and Yajnas, including 'Asvamedha Yajna'.  From the epic and puranic ages, Ayodhya rose to prominence again in the 6th century B.C. the times of Buddha.

Later excursion trip for Sarnath temple.  Sarnath is devoted to Lord Shiva, the most sa cred shrine in Varanasi.  It is about 15km from the holy city of Varanasi, where Buddha decided to convey his first oration. The illustrious Mantra, 'BuddhamSharanamGachhami', owes its foundation to Sarnath.  Later followed by city tour Visit the Vishwanath temple, also called the golden temple.  Return to Varanasi.

DELHI

This is the capital of India and can be called as a major gateway to India.  Delhi is one of the most important metropolitan in India, as it is the city of power.  It has a very good combination of both modern, as well as ancient culture.  In these 3000 years of its existence, there has been the origin of seven more cities, where the traditional Indian capital is.

Strategic location, mixture of modern and Indian culture, rich history, medieval market, beside the modern ones etc are the main reasons of choosing it, as the seat of power.  Delhi is a city waiting to be explored.  It is also known as the Headquarters of Indian politics, as most of the heads of the Indian government and other political parties; reside here, including the Prime Minister and President of the country.
Overnight at Hotel.

VARANASI

The city of Varanasi is situated along the west bank of the Ganges in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Called Benaras by the British, Varanasi is an important pilgrimage centre for the Hindus.  The city finds mention in the great epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana.  It was a flourishing trade center when Buddha came to Sarnath, about 10 kilometers away, to  preach his first sermon in 500 BC.  The renowned American novelist Mark Twain once wrote, ''Benara is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together.''  Right from the ancient times, Varanasi has stood as a symbol of Hindu renaissance and preserved the rituals and traditions of Hindu philosophy.  Down the ages, pilgrims from distant lands have come to Varanasi in search of divine blessings.

Afternoon city tour of Varanasi visiting temples from the major source of attraction in this ancient city.  The banks of the Ganges, considered to be a sacred river by the Hindus are the centre of much of the religious activity that occurs in the city.  The ghats built along the banks of the river for such religous activity also form a major source of attraction here.  Some of the other interesting places to visit around the city are Alamgir Mosque, Durga Temple, Vishwanat Temple, Bharat Mata temple, Tulsi Manas Temple, Banaras Hindu University and the Archaeological Museum.  In the evening witness the glittering Aarti ceremony at the Ganges.

POKHARA

The biggest tourist destination in Nepal after Kathmandu, Pokhara is a subtropic valley surrounded by lofty Himalayan peaks.  The name Pokhara has been derived from pokhri, a word in Nepali signifying pond.  In earlier times the place was a big lake.  Today in addition to the town, there are three major lakes namely, Phewa, Rupa and Begnas here.  Due to its nearness to the Himalayan peaks, Pokhara is home to some of the most beautiful vistas in the world.  The abrupt changes in the altitude makes the place even more exciting. Pokhara does not have a long history.  It was founded in the 16th century by Gurungs.  The construction of two national highways in the 1970's marked the phase of modern development here and in no time it became a well-known hippie hideout.  Today Pokhara is the centre of river rafting industry and starting point of some of the most exciting treks besides being an important administrative and commercial centre in Nepal.  The town landscape has changed a lot in the last few decades and a concrete jungle has come up to satisfy needs of ever increasing number of visitors but Pokhara has still maintained its small town image that is best experienced during the off season.

LUCKNOW

Popularly known as the seat of the Nawabi culture, Lucknow stands out as a city that takes pride in the endearing but subdued atriculation of its essence and identity.  Its mystical elegance and amorous ethos rarely fail to fascinate a perceptive mind.  Indeed it is difficult to remain unimpressed by its 'tehzeeb'  (cultural refinement), hospitality, politeness, cuisines and 'Shaam-e-Awadh'.  At the same time, Lucknow is placed among the fastest growing cities of India and is rapidly emerging as a manufacturing, commercial and retailing hub.  This unique combination of rich cultural traditions and brisk economic growth provides Lucknow with an aura that refuses to fade away.  Afternoon city orientation tour.

CHENNAI

Chennai - Capital of the south-eastern state of Tamil Nadu, Chennai is one of the four major metropolitan cities in India.  Today, it is hard to believe that a place that was till 1639 just a small fishing village would become such an enormous and beautiful city.  Situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal,  Chennai is perhaps the most peaceful and green metropolis in India.  Chennai has a number of attractions for the tourists to see.  One of them is the beautiful Marina beach, where the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal mingle with the golden sands.  The city has its share of forts and palaces reminding the tourists of the glory bygone eras.

MADURAI

Kumarakom is also famous for its old churches and the exceptionally popular ayurveda treatment.  Cochin is popularly known as the 'Queen on the Arabian Sea' and is the oldest European settlement in India. Surrounded by backwaters, this city has always managed to atrract voyagers to travel to Kerala, India.

Afternoon city tour of Cochin visiting Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese, known for its murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and dresses and palanquins used by Cochin's erstwhile rulers;  Koonan Kurishu Shrine which is a small chapel, Jewish Synagogue which has a number of copper plates inscribed in the Hebrew script.  Fort Kochi, St Francis Church, the oldest one to be constructed by Europeans in India; Santa Cruz Basilica with a beautifully painted ceiling, and, Chinese Fishing Nets near the harbour's entrance of Cochin.

COCHIN - OOTY

Ooty:  Nestled among the hills of Dodabetta, Snowdon, Elk Hill and Club Hill in the Nigiri ranges, Ooty (also Ootacamund or Udhagamandalam) is the queen of the southern hill stations and a popular tourist destination of Tamil Nadu.  The history of Ooty goes back to about 900 years when it was ruled by Vishnu Vardhana, the Hoysala king from AD 1104 to 1141.  The city also finds mention in the writing of Jacome Ferico, the first European to visit this place in 1603.  In 1799, this hilly region came under the control of the British East India Company.  The British established Ooty to serve as the summer headquarters of the Madras government.  A government house was built and keeping in tune with the English lifestyle, the British set up cottages and clubs, with facilities for tennis, golf and horse riding.  With the establishment of numerous tea estates in the subsequent years, Ooty made its presence felt in the tourist map of India.

OOTY - MYSORE

Mysore was ruled by the Wodeyars since the 14th century except for a brief period of 40 years in the later 18th century when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan ruled over the city.  The Wodeyar family managed to get back the kingdom when, in 1799, Tipu Sultan surrendered to the British.  The benevolent rule of the Wodeyar kings is evident in the city's meticulous planning.  The city's architectural heritage and its long-held tradition of music and dance, art and literature were nurtured under their patronage.  This city is 'The Jewel of Karnataka' and provides glimpses of its past grandeur.  Stately Mysore with its tree lined boulevards, grand palaces and gardens is one of India's finest cities.  Life retains its calm measured pace, punctuated by outbursts of activity, celebrating festvials.  Today's program includes a city tour covering Maharaja's Palace built as recently as 1897.
